"The Walking Dead" to be TV Series
Finally, some good news. According to the Hollywood Reporter, AMC recently acquired the rights to the ever-so addictive comic books “The Walking Dead.” The series, written by Robert Kirkman is to be turned into a television series directed, scripted, and produced by Frank Darabont (writer and director of both The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption; scriptwriter of the 1994 Frankenstein.)
Kirkman’s mastery of depicting human turmoil and drama within extreme circumstances is slated to be a diabolical match for the “The Walking Dead” storyline, which follows a group of survivors in a post-zombie apocalypse. Led by police officer Rick Grimes, the group faces a multitude of issues and conflicts while trying to avoid further casualties.
In an interview with MTV this past August, Kirkman stated, “I'm going to be an executive producer on the show, so I'll have my hands all over the thing. But it's important to me that I'm only involved in the show as much my comic book career will allow. I'm excited that there is a television show, and I'm excited that Darabont is involved—and one of the big reasons for that is that I trust him. I don't need to look over his shoulder."
When AMC was asked why they wanted to add a zombie series to their lineup, they simply said, “It allows us to stay where we want to stay: in the world of smart, sophisticated storytelling.”
As for how zombies and gore will fit in to this borderline sexy storytelling, Kirkman mentioned this, “one of the concerns I have about zombie fiction is when they rely too much on the shocking gore aspects. That's not really the point of ‘Walking Dead,’ so to a certain extent, I think it will work better at AMC—because it forces people not to rely on that stuff…The thing is, you don't necessarily have to see everything that's going on, and sometimes things are even more horrific when you don't see the goriest parts.”
Here at 8DI, we have a firm belief that the series will help awaken long-buried survival instincts in all viewers and we will make sure and keep you posted on the show.
